Preparing for Auditions
A supportive journey, not a stressful process
My role is to help your child feel ready, capable and proud — not pressured. Whether your child is aiming for Southwell Minster Junior Department or any other selective school, our sessions build the underlying musical skills and inner confidence that auditions truly reward.
Above all, I want children to see auditions not as a test, but as a chance to share something they love, grow in confidence, and take the next step on their musical journey.
⭐ PREPARING FOR AUDITIONS
Auditions can feel daunting for young musicians — but they don’t have to be. My audition preparation sessions help children feel calm, confident and excited about sharing their music, whether they’re applying for Southwell Minster Junior Department or other schools with musical aptitude assessments.
Music auditions are about much more than playing notes correctly. Schools are looking for children who listen well, respond musically, enjoy performing, and show potential. That’s why our preparation focuses on the whole musician, not just the piece they play.
🎵 What we work on together
• Rhythm & Aural Skills
We practise clapping back rhythms, singing melodies by ear, matching pitch and developing musical memory — the core skills assessed in Minster-style aptitude tests.
• Confident, expressive performance
Children learn not just to play a piece, but to communicate it — showing expression, emotion and musical understanding.
• Mindset & confidence
I teach simple, gentle techniques to help children feel steady, brave and proud when performing. We rehearse arriving at the audition, breathing calmly, starting with confidence, and recovering if things go wrong.
• Introducing themselves and their music
We practise saying their name clearly, introducing their piece, and speaking with confidence — small details that make a big difference to the impression they give.
• Enjoying the process
When children enjoy their music, their performance always improves. We keep sessions light, fun and engaging so they associate auditions with excitement rather than pressure.
• Working alongside school or private teachers
Many children come to me outside their regular lessons for extra coaching in performance, confidence and aural skills. My work complements what they already learn with their main teacher.
